The May issue of ABA Banking Journal ran an article showing the top 25 big banks by 2007 return on average equity, and explaining how the top banks managed to do so well. The ranking was based on public banks, thrifts, and bank holding companies over $3 billion in assets. A separate table showed the top ten private banking companies and foreign-owned U.S. banks and thrifts over $3 billion. Below are links to the full lists of these two groups‹157 of the public companies and 43 of the private/foreign-owned institutions, shown in descending order of ROE.
