WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE IPAD APPS AND USES?

Posted by Steve Cocheo in Pass the Aspirin The Blog

The Headache: Personal productivity continues to grow in importance. Bankers have taken to the iPad, and may cotton to other tablet devices as time goes on.

Our Question: What iPad "apps" do you find particularly helpful? What tasks does the iPad make easier or more efficient for you? Has your bank adapted the iPad for any special purposes, such as board meetings?

Come see what other bankers think, and add your own views

When bankers adopt iPads, does it improve their worklife?

The iPad took personal technology by storm, and the way people lined up recently for the new iPad just boggled the mind.

You can't go to a banking conference now without seeing bankers all over the room using their tablets to check email, take notes, and more. We half suspect some executives we've been watching, who may not have found the speakers exciting enough, have been catching up on office work!

Have you got an iPad? Tell us what you are doing with it on the job, and what "apps" you really like.

Do you have a tablet besides the iPad? Go ahead and tell us about that. Apple doesn't rule the world, yet.

The iPad has definitely changed my reading and computing habits. I rarely take my laptop computer on trips now, and find the iPad is the quickest device for checking e-mail, looking for maps or directions, updating my social media sites, or browsing the web.
As for favorite business apps, I like dropbox.com, which allows you to store copies of your documents ?in the cloud? and access them from your iPad, smartphone, or any computer. It automatically synchs documents in the dropbox on all of my computing devices?iPad, laptop, and desktop.
Instapaper is another favorite app. When I find an article on a website that I want to read but don?t have time right then, I can move it to Instapaper and access it offline later. This is perfect for catching up on reading when you aren?t in a Wi-Fi zone.

Almost a year ago we went to paperless board meetings. Using a third-party board portal administrator, CSIweb@work, from CSI, our directors log on to the portal using laptops, netbooks, or, as four of our directors have chosen, iPads. I also use this same technology for loan committee meetings. This has greatly reduced our paper usage. I continue to find new uses for the iPad, including note taking in meetings.

I like to use Penultimate for taking (and archiving) notes in meetings. I use it in conjunction with a stylus for easier writing. I also use Calculator Pro for ... drum roll ... calculations. I use CNBC RT for instant stock quotes and/or commodity pricing if we need the information during an ALCO or senior management team meeting.

At a time when change and innovation is occuring faster than ever, keeping up with the changes becomes more difficult yet more imperative. The two apps that I find the most helpful are Blogshelf and Twitter.

With Blogshelf, I am able to keep track of the best blogs in the industry that provide insights and updates on trends and future innovations. Some of my favorite blogs include The Financial Brand, NetBanker, BAI Bank Strategies Magazine, Javelin Strategy, Celent, Finextra, Forrester, MattWilcoxPro and my own blog, Bank Marketing Strategy (jimmarous.blogspot.com). There is also a list of industry blogs located on the ABA Banking Journal website and on The Financial Brand site.

With Twitter, I can follow some of the leading thought leaders in the industry on a more timely basis. I usually sign on in the morning and review activity from overnight and sign off at the end of the day to see what has happpened. What is a great benefit of Twitter for a marketer or product manager is that you can not only get opinions on changes in the marketplace, but also links to research from hundreds of sources that streamline the process of prioritizing reading. Again, some of my favorite people/companies to follow on Twitter include @ABABankingJourn, @fintech, @rshevlin, @SNLBankNews, @banktechnews, @AmerBanker, @FinancialBrand @BAI_info, @comscore, @paymentsviews, @colloquy, @accenture, @crossfin, @finovate, @thebankchannel, @brettking, @Novantasllc, and @jimmarous.

Following these active participants on Twitter will lead a banker to more people and companies of interest in their category and will also make them more familiar with this social media.

For me, these two apps make my iPad (and iPhone) indespensible as an educational tool and a way to keep in touch with what is occuring in our rapidly changing industry.

I use my iPad for blog posting, board reports, and staff management. My favorite app is PDFExpert. It allows me to review policies, documents and correspondence in PDF format and annotate, highlight, comment and sign with my signature documents and pass them along with all being available to other users in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

A true productivity tool.

I have found that do a lot of reading on the iPad that I didn't do before. Having everything so convenient is the key.

I really like iBooks for managing PDFs, but prefer the Kindle app for reading books as more of the titles that I'm looking for are available there.

I have also recently started using an app called News.me which pulls content from my twitter feed and publishes it in a slick e-magazine format. I find that I'm able to access more relavent content much quicker due to the filters.

I also love instapaper for the ability to not only save for later, but to archive articles.
