Direct from Vegas/Post 2: The Future of the Future

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

The Wombat’s world at CES it is as exciting as much as it is alarming. The financial institution industry is already behind from what has emerged, and when you add to that what is coming, the industry is running backwards and doesn’t realize it. Furthermore, it would only take one day at the show for a financial industry executive, technologist , or marketing manager to arrive at the same conclusion. At CES you are exposed to an unlimited set of technological ideas and uses in a totally unplugged environment. CES exhibitors display current generation, next generation, prototype, and future innovations. It is all here, in contrast to the typical bank conference that only demonstrates what is available today.

Direct from Vegas/post 1: What's hot for banking at CES

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

I am writing from the floor of CES 2010. From my account, the ABA Banking Journal is the only financial industry publication represented at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas. It is interesting that the banking industry is absent from such an important, exciting and relevant conference. Moving on, why should financial institutions be interested in CES and in what is hot here?

WELCOME, AND PLEASE TURN ON YOUR CELLPHONES

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

You’re in the middle of a PowerPoint presentation. As you look out over your audience, you are met with blank stares. You vary the approach, but the stares remain. You wonder what the problem might be, but you’re just not sure. The frustrating point is, if you knew what the issue was, you could correct it!

The next generation Mobiles!

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

Gen Y and the Digital Natives, move over. Here come the Mobiles, an entire generation of young students that are using the mobile phone, or cell phone if you prefer that, as their primary technology. No desktop, laptop, or web book, just a cell phone.

Email: a landfill where nothing goes away!

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

Corporate email systems have become an electronic landfill of information replacing the lateral file. Why? As the cost of storage continues to go down and storage allocations are increased by the IT Department, more stuff is squirreled away into digital darkness never to be seen again. More importantly, as part of the budget process, email system growth has a budgeted line item because nothing, or at least very little, is ever deleted!

Skip the About Us drop-down. Try an About You video

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

As an industry, we are really missing a tremendous opportunity. Have you looked at banking websites lately? I am not talking about your internet banking page. I am talking about your home page. The landing page that gives the online visitor your locations, lists all of your products, has an “About Us” option and a plethora of drop-down boxes.

Why you should budget to attend CES

Posted by Dan Fisher in Beyond the Bank

I know there’s a straitjacket on nonessential travel, but there is one conference that you should push to attend. On Jan. 7, 2010, the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) opens in Las Vegas. This four-day event is the largest display of innovations in the world with over 100,000 participants. Gadgets, cutting-edge technology, experimental prototypes, and games in a wide range of applications, from the trivial to the educational are on display.
