In the post Dodd-Frank era, many observers, and even some bankers, were wondering if community banks could survive in the new environment. There are real challenges, to be sure, but the fact is, as reported in Part 2 of ABA Banking Journal’s 19th Annual Bank Performance Rankings, community banks remain a vital part of the financial services industry.

According to Vanessa Mambrino and Nick Robin of Capital Performance Group, who wrote the Top Performers report for the June print edition, numerous community banks have already figured out that they can do more than survive. Although one-time events played a part in the success of some of the top performers, many were able to capitalize on rising asset values, increased refinancing activity (in 2010), and low interest rates.

In this print article, because of space limitations, only the top 25 top performers could be shown in four categories.

In this online report, the top 100 community banks are shown based on their yearend return on average equity. In addition, the online tables, listed below, contain additional data, as do the summary tables.

As in past years, we run two sets of rankings online: 1. the rankings based on consolidated data for the highest regulatory reporting level (which is what appeared in print), and 2. the rankings based on charter-level data.

In addition, read four mini-profiles of banks from among the top performers that did not appear in the print report.

Finally, a more detailed description of the ranking methodology is shown below.
