STOP THE GOSSIP!

The Headache: Corrosive office gossip can be sand in the gears of your bank.

Our Question: How does your bank stop damaging office gossip?

Come see what other bankers think, and add your own views

How do you stop damaging office gossip?

"Did you hear the latest?"

Office gossip. Every office has it. Much of it is natural, so natural we have many expressions for it: "scuttlebutt"; "vibe"; "word on the street"; "the latest dirt"; and "the grapevine."

Some of it is impersonal rumor about the bank. Harmless, perhaps, perhaps not, but still business.

But some of it gets personal, and damaging, if not outright libelous and even dangerous.

Unchecked gossip can damage working relationships, employee performance, and worse.

Come tell us how your bank keeps gossip from undermining the bank and its people.
· If you're a manager, what do you do to curb gossip? What is your institution's policy on it?
· If you're an employee, how do you avoid office gossip?

Here's my two-cents:

We have a "no drama" rule established in our department. Our managers do not tolerate gossip, rumors, bad behavior or what we would consider "drama". This can be done by meeting with each colleague and with new colleagues when we are setting expectations. We each have enough drama in our personal lives so it's difficult to have to manage that at work. If and when a disruption occurs, the managers handle each situation swiftly and with the parties involved.
