Christmas comes twice

The holiday season is all about anticipation. As the holidays approach couples, families, friends, children, and co-workers all begin to get excited anticipating the many fun activities and the gift of giving.

* * *
For some, however, Christmas comes again in January! It is the Consumer Electronics Show and what happens at the show will most likely happen in your home, office, or car in as little as eleven months. It is an advance look at what the next holiday season will bring. CES is the largest show of its type in the world. All the bigs—Sony, Intel, Panasonic, LG, Microsoft—show off their new and developing products. The little guys also get the opportunity to roll the dice, buy a booth, and hope their idea will strike gold. Crazier things have happened.

So if you want to see the future, be the future by attending the CES in Las Vegas. It runs from January 6-9 (www.cesweb.org). I’ll be there writing about some of the latest and greatest ideas that are being rolled out, and this year I may even post some video. I purchased a Flip camera and am committed to learning how to use it before the show.

Back to anticipation… What does the Wombat think will be the exciting items of the conference this year?

No doubt mobile technology will continue to lead the way. Original Equipment Manufacturers like HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson will bring products loaded with new features. Integration will also have a major spot in the showcase. The Google Android operating system is the leader in this space. The I-Phone is no longer number one and despite its near-cult status, it will continue to lose market share. What’s totally hot when it is cold outside? Being able to start your car from anywhere in the world with your cell phone! Yep, it is real.

New developments in spatial interfaces will be another hot topic. The Nintendo Kinect is a new game product for this season, but we will most likely see this technology drive the move away from touch-screen technology into touch-less technology. After all, most banking lobbies have large flat panel monitors displaying just about everything. Just add the touch-less interface to the screen or kiosk and no more hand sanitizer is needed.

E-couple technology will ultimately eliminate all of the chargers that you need today for the many handheld devices that we use. Just a pad on a desktop or coffee table is all you will need. Place your mobile phone, remote phone or laptop on the pad and in a few minutes you are charged. Now expand this concept—e-couple devices can be imbedded in walls, desktops along with wireless devices and now you have "Be Anywhere" computing. No need for an AC plug in the wall, an extension cord, or a phone line.

Large flat panel and very thin television screens will continue to be a big attention getter. I also expect to start seeing some holographic technology beginning to emerge. This will definitely trump 3-D because it is screen-less! Imagine that.

Walt Disney invented Imagineering and it is alive and well at CES! If you are a banker and you want to take a look at what is coming your way, then you need to attend and get a look at what your customers will soon be demanding.
