Unfortunately the problem is larger than the survival of the community banking sector. In spite of Washington's plea for banks to lend to small business, it would be crazy to do so. The local regulators would become even more vicious. Most of the bank CEO's I talk with feel the same. If there is no credit available to small business, there will be no sustained economic recovery, employment will continue to stagnate, and we will be faced with an extended period of slow or negative economic growth combined with ever-higher federal deficits and lack of community services because of falling local tax revenues. Forebearance would be a good idea and enable some of us to live to fight another day while helping the economy to improve. - David Brewick
