Did you hear about the Boston-area store owners who were caught abusing electronic benefit cards and then using proceeds to buy drugs? How about the student loan fraud uncovered in Arizona and Mississippi in which a community college was scammed out of $270,000? You would have if you checked the new online forum by LexisNexis Risk Solutions called “Fraud of the Day.” While it focuses on informing government officials about how fraud is being perpetrated on them, it also provides real-time insights on how crooks use electronic means to steal. Located at www.fraudoftheday.com, the site offers a medium for information sharing and highlights different fraud-related news articles each day, incorporating commentary by fraud, waste, and abuse experts such as Larry Benson, director of strategic alliances for revenue discovery and recovery at LexisNexis. The forum features links to news, events and resources pertaining to governmental fraud, video commentary from experts in the tax and revenue and social services arenas and “Fraud Commentary by Larry,” drawing attention to fraud in the news and ideas/tidbits on combating it. “Most taxpayers are willing to pay their fair share so that federal, state and local government agencies can provide key services like education and public safety, but there are also unscrupulous individuals out there who are defrauding the government,” says Haywood Talcove, CEO, Government, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “Identifying how the government and, most importantly, the taxpayer are being defrauded and solutions to stop it are key ways to find savings. When we realized that there was no single resource dedicated to informing government about the many types of fraud, we knew it was important to develop this resource.” “There is a real demand for information about governmental fraud,” says Benson. “As the economy remains in flux, perpetrators are finding more and more creative methods of defrauding the government of money. This forum will bring some of these approaches to light, enabling the individuals charged with fighting fraud to learn, share and interact with each other.” |
