2010 was a transition year marked by challenges and glimmers of hope.

In the 19th Annual ABA Banking Journal performance rankings, the average return on average equity for the top 25 institutions at yearend 2010 was 12.82%. This was down from 15.38% in 2009, but it was far better than the 2010 average for all 139 publicly traded banks, thrifts, and holding companies, which was
-1.18%.

Vanessa Mambrino and Nick Robin of Capital Performance Group, in their analysis of the results, note that a big difference in 2010 was that large nationwide banks regained top-performer status. Four institutions with total assets over $100 billion appeared in the top 25 in 2010, compared with only one the year before. As in 2009, top-performing institutions were more efficient than their peers and maintained lower levels of nonperforming loans. Yields were maintained more often through investments than loans, and acquisitions played a significant role, as well, the authors report.

In this online report, you can read or download the analysis as it appears in the April 2011 print publication. In addition, the ranking tables and summary table appear below showing data for all institutions in the “public” and “private/foreign-owned” categories. These online tables contain additional data on each institution that for space reasons could not be included in the print edition.

Likewise, the Summary table has additional comparative data not shown in print.
